Joining the FPA is a simple 3 step process

Step 1 Select the applicable membership category
FPA membership categories are assigned to signify a member’s experience, qualifications, and employment relationship, including commitment to high professional standards and a code of ethics and rules. If you are not sure which category you should join, please contact the FPA on 1800 626 393.
| Principal membership |
|

|
Principal membership is available to individuals and companies who hold an AFS licence to give personal financial planning advice to retail clients. There are three levels of Principal membership Small (less than 20 representatives), Medium (more than 20, less than 100 representatives), and Large (more than 100 representatives). |
|
Requirements:
- Hold a current Australian Financial Services Licence to give personal financial advice issued by the Australian and Investment Commission (ASIC).
Holds appropriate professional indemnity insurance.
Holds current membership of FICS or another ASIC approved external dispute resolution scheme.

| Practitioner membership |
| There are two levels of Practitioner membership1 - Associate Financial Planner (AFP) and CFP®. |

| Associate Financial Planner (AFP)
| |
|
| The FPA AFP level of membership is granted to those who have completed educational requirements as well as one (1) year’s approved practitioner experience. |
|
Requirements:
- Has completed a Diploma Financial Services (DFS)
and RG(PS)146 compliant
- Holds Authorised Representative status
- Minimum one (1) year plus approved practitioner
experience including Authorised Representative status for the full period

| CFP® |
|
|
|
The CFP® practitioner designation is the global symbol of excellence in financial planning. It is awarded to practitioners who meet high standards of education and experience. |

General membership |
|
|
| General membership is available to any person with a professional interest in the financial services industry, e.g. Business Development. |
|
Requirements:
- A professional interest in financial planning.

|
| Future Planner |
|
|
| Future Planners are those employed in roles such as paraplanner, administration, customer service representative and assistant planner, with a view to becoming a financial planner. |
|
Requirements:
- A tertiary qualification in a finance related field, or enrolled part time in a program leading to such a tertiary qualification
- Does not satisfy practitioner membership criteria or does not hold Authorised Representative status
- Aged 28 or less, or earning $65k pa or less

| Retired membership |
|
|
|
Available to any persons who has a professional interest in financial planning but is no longer in full-time employment and is retired. |

Requirements:
- No longer working full-time
- Retired members must not hold Authorised Representative status.
